Burlesque from Montreal! Circus from Berlin! Sideshow freaks from Portland! The best of the best are gathering from around the world for a one-night event in Houston, Texas. The Bayou City Burlesque & Circus Arts Festival (BCBC Festival) is returning to Warehouse Live, April 22.
The festival brings together timeless and titillating performances to celebrate the artists keeping these classic forms of entertainment alive. The event’s world-renowned acts range from Vegas style bump-n-grind burlesque to bizarre sideshow stunts to death-defying aerialist that will leave audience members on the edge of their seats.
It may surprise folks to learn that Houston has become one of the top places for artists of this caliber to perform. What makes the Bayou City such a huge draw in the burlesque world? That can be answered by Houston’s very own international award-winning burlesque performer, radio personality and festival producer, KiKi Maroon.
“I’ve spent the past six years performing around the world, finding artists, and bringing them back to Houston,” Maroon says. “It’s given this city a reputation for curating the finest shows, featuring the most eclectic performers.”
Maroon says that performing in Houston has become an accomplishment among the artists.
“With so many talented people wanting to participate, the selection committee didn’t have it easy,” she says.
This year’s BCBC Festival broke records with hundreds of applications coming in from seven countries, 26 U.S. states, and seven Canadian provinces, with performers all vying for the chance to strut their stuff in Houston.
With the reign of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey coming to an end, there is a huge void in the circus world. Maroon and her team intend to fill this need for live entertainment with a Houston run event. To accomplish this, they’ve booked over 40 local and national artists.
Sugar Vixen, “The Rock Star of Burlesque”, is a burlesque dancer from Montreal, Quebec featured in Dita Von Teese’s Montreal show and at the Calgary International Burlesque Festival.
Reverend Tommy Gunn’s FreakShow Deluxe from Los Angeles, California has been seen on America’s Got Talent, TruTV’s Full Throttle Saloon, Sábado Giganteand Discovery Channel’s Time Warp.
Emily Cage the Airborne Pinup Aerialist from Berlin, Germany, performs death-defying stunts that have been seen from Coney Island to San Francisco, and all over Europe.
Matt Finish, the King of Burlesque from Tucson, Arizona has been crowned by the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, Nevada.
